Farmer’s Market

Saturday is farmer’s market day in the small town a bit east of the even smaller town we drive by to get there.  It isn’t a large market though when there are crowds there as this morning it does take on a festive air.  I took my pocket camera along to take pics and nearly forgot until we were leaving.  I did a quick stroll back down the middle and snapped off a few.

I stopped for a bit and talked to the woman who had the pottery stand.  All her pots and bowls looked really great, whimsical and very well done.  She gave me her card when I told her that I would probably blog about the market visit, and asked that I link to her web page.  My pleasure, Ma’am.  Stop in and give Karen’s work a look-I love it.  There are links on her site to her Facebook page,  some gallery pics of her work, and a link to her etsy store.

  2. My pleasure, Karen, you do very good work.

  3. wow, looks like a great farmer’s market, much better than ours….

  4. Wow Jeffw, a post about the farmer’s market and supporting local artists. Two of my favorite things (animals and cooking being the other things we cover that are high on my list). Great post!

  5. And Karen, I just clicked over to your sites, adorable pottery pieces. I’ve bookmarked you for gift ideas.

  6. our Farmer’s Market is more bling than zing so i get my fresh summer produce from a CSA / last week a bag of baby carrots, none bigger than my finger, begging to be pickled using David Leibowitz”s simple pickle recipe

this week the golden treasure was a heaping big bunch of just picked young carrots (everything is organic, of course) / i recalled French Cooking at Home making carrot jam so i googled up Carrot Jam, found a recipe, and jammed those carrots

this carrot jam was the best jam i ever had so i picked enough beets from our garden to fill out the CSA share of beets and made Beet Jam using the Carrot Jam recipe

incredibly yummy / you wd never know you were eating your veggies when you eat these jams

although i did make lemon marmalade during Meyer Lemon season i have not been experienced at making jams but these were so much fun to make i am going to make some more / great gift items

  7. this is the recipe i used with a few tweaks, of course

    http://www.recipetips.com/recipe-cards/t–2336/carrot-jam.asp

e g , i had 8 cups of grated carrots, used three oranges, two lemons, two limes, zest of all 6, 5 cups of sugar, pinch of cardomon, pinch of cinnamon. slurp of vanilla

canned via water bath, ten minutes for my altitude, in smallish jars

  8. Katherine-

Those jams sound yummy! Except for the beets, anyway. Alas, we use little to no sugar and Splenda is OK, but just can’t replace sugar in jams. The physical properties are just too different.
I know what you mean by the bling. Flea market stuff. We have some of that but the produce vendors predominate.

  9. Nice Farmer’s Market you have there. I have a stand in ours, but it’s mush smaller, maybe fifteen booths in all. We’re constantly trying to get more vendors in, and some of the vendors have left because local stores or restaurants have consigned most of their stuff so they don’t have enough to sell at the market. Good for the farmer, bad for the market itself.
