It was 100 degrees yesterday and I looked out and saw Nora panting, so it was time for some sprinkler fun. They played for about 30 minutes and then seemed content until the cool front arrived around bedtime.
But they managed to find mud in a snow-covered yard….again.
Ducks round 2. It’s -1 outside, so ducks are inside.
Yes, I am questioning my life choices. LOL
…they are anything but. Story soon.
It’s sub-zero out tonight and most of tomorrow, so that meant the ducks had to come inside. The coop is not set up for those kind of rare temps. So, for the second time in five years, ducks have had to spend the night in the bathroom.
This is Nick and Nora’s first winter and I must say, they are not very fond of it. So they seem much too happy to be installed inside at the moment.
The duckteens experienced their first blast of winter and were not too pleased about it. They had to stay in their coop (which, to be fair has a decent-sized yard attached) until it was warm enough for their little flat feet.
This is a short-lived cold snap and for most of the winter, they’ll be outside all day. We have very few days too cold for them to trek around the yard.
Nora has been doing something very interesting – she’s been very motherly with her eggs. Every night she creates a nest, gathers the fake egg and adds her own (usually in the early morning). This morning she covered them with a deep layer of wood chips. She’s the first of my many ducks to show this kind of instinct. I’m wondering if come early summer next year she might actually be broody and stay with her eggs. That could be intersting.
It’s official. Just before bed last night it was quite clear that Nick’s drake feather popped. Was 99% sure, because of his quack, he was a boy – but didn’t want to make assumptions. Not one of my ducks sounds the same, so figured no reason not to wait until we had a definitive answer.
Without further ado, here are Nick and his drake feather:
So it’s officially Nick and Nora. If they open their own detective agency, I’m sure it’ll make a good story…
